Test: Preference test

Preference tests can be used when you want participants to choose between design variations, you want to hear which design your participants thinks communicate your message best, which design participants judges as most modern, etc. You just need to show them the design and afterwards ask them.

Examples of questions a preference test can answer:

  • Which design they prefer
  • Which design that looks the most trustworthy
  • Which design that looks the most modern
  • Which design that looks the easiest to use
  • Etc.

Preely offers two ways of setting up a preference test, either: 1. Here you ask your participants to click on the design they prefer; 2.Here you show your design and afterwards ask the questions you want aswered.

Step-by-step guide to setting up a preference test in Preely (Questions up front + endpoint)

In this one you ask your participants to click on the design they prefer.

Step 1. Upload prototype
From the start screen click “Create test”. Choose device and upload your design(s) (screenshot, Adobe XD-, Figma- or Scetch artboards, or via InVision Cloud link).

Step 2. Create task
Click 'Insert new element', choose 'Add task'. Write introduction to the task and the task your participant should do. Click 'Save'. Click 'Add ending' and choose endpoint. Now you add an endpoints over each design the participant can choose.

Example:

Introduction: We are testing different design options.
Task: Click on the design you prefer.

Step 3. Ask questions
Click 'Insert element' and choose 'Add question'. Then fill in the questions and choose answer types (rating, multiple choice or free response).

Example of question:
Why did you choose this design? Answer type: Free response.

Step 4. Analytics:
Look at ‘Actions’ and see how many that have chosen the different options.

Step 2. Create task
Click 'Insert new element', choose 'Add task'. Write introduction to the task and the task your participant should do. Click 'Save'. Click 'Add ending' and choose timer and set time e.g. 1000 ms (10 sec.).

Example:
Introduction: We are testing different design options.
Task: You are going to see different designs for 10 sec. afterwards we are asking you different questions about your experience.

Step 3. Ask questions
Click 'Insert element' and choose 'Add question'. Then fill in the questions and choose answer types (rating, multiple choice or free response).

Example of questions:
Which design did you prefer? Answer type: Multiple choice.
Follow-up question: Why did you choose this design?

Which design looked most trustworthy? Answer type: Multiple choice.
Follow-up question: Why did you choose this design?

Step 4. Analytics
Look at the distribution in multiple choice and the follow up answers.
